Garlic
One of my favorite flavorings has got to be Garlic, it’s very popular in the Italian and Spanish recipes as I have experienced first hand from my girlfriend who sometimes slightly overdoes it and gets carried away!
It is thought that garlic originated in Asia but is now grown in most warm climates, it’s related to the onion though has a far stronger flavor. Although its related to the onion, it doesn’t really look like it, a bulb of garlic is white and consists of 10 or so purple cloves, which are moon shaped slices that need to be peeled and usually chopped or crushed before use.
As well as its uses in cookery, garlic also has medical uses and many people take garlic supplements to boost their immune systems, help lower blood pressure and protect the body from cholesterol. Its not just folklore, many of its properties have been medically proved hence its popularity.
Garlic is a key ingredient to have in the cupboard that can add something to any dish. I’m particularly keen on garlic bread which is simply crushed garlic mixed with butter and put on top of bread in the over. Delicious!!
